How a basement webcomic gets made

Lower Level Legends is a vertical-scroll webcomic about three friends, two TVs and one basement. This page shows how an episode goes from a script to the page, and what changed along the way.

The cast

Each lead gets a name caption the first time the comic shows his face. These are the captions, word for word.

ZachBuilt this basement himself. Very hard to impress.
LexxOne year older. Already made every mistake you're about to make.
BobbyKnows more than he's saying.

From script to page

Every episode is a small script file. The script is the record: the art, the words and the page all come from it, so changing one line means changing one file and building again.

  1. Write the lines.Panels, captions, speech bubbles and sound effects go in scripts/make_epNN.py. A dialogue guide keeps every line sounding like a person talking, not a summary.
  2. Write the episode data. The script writes episodes/epNN.json. Nobody edits that file by hand.
  3. Flag weak lines.A checker lists every line that is very short, very long, or starts the same way as the ones around it. A clean result does not mean a line is good; a person still reads them all.
  4. Draw the panels. Each still is generated with an image model, with every character locked to approved reference art. A few panels get a short moving loop. Episode 2's were made on a home graphics card from the approved still, used as both the first and last frame, so the loop never jumps.
  5. Build the reader.scripts/build.py turns every still into a 1280 px WebP image and puts all episodes into one page. On this site the reader is the home page: the series, then each episode on the same page.
  6. Look at every panel.Screenshots of the whole episode get read panel by panel before anything is published. Then back to step 1 for anything that is wrong.
RuleThe art never has words in it. Every bubble, caption and sound effect is text the page draws on top, so a line can change without making a new picture.

Zach...Why didn't it work?

Episode 2, panel 8: the picture is plain art; the bubble is page text.

The log

Dated from the project's own records: the script files, the issue tracker and the notes kept after each work session.

  1. 10-14-2026

    Infinite Camo is written

The first finished episode: Zach unlocks a new skin called Infinite Camo and is sure it makes him invisible. A writers' review scored the draft 8.15 out of 10. Then the owner put back his own beats from the first version:

    • the third run, "I'M INVINCIBLE!"
    • the respawn animation, and the silent look where Zach and Bobby see this could go on forever
    • the crouch run, kept because it was funny and stretched the joke

Seven panels got moving loops the same day.

  2. 10-14-2026

    The Remote becomes Episode 1

A new first episode, built from the art of an earlier lost-remote story. It introduces Zach, Lexx and Bobby with name captions, and ends with Bobby handing over the remote so the three can start co-op. Infinite Camo moved to Episode 2, unchanged. Cut from the old version: a 4:47 AM time jump and a TV glitch. The project was split so each episode keeps its own art folder and panel ids never collide.

  3. 10-15-2026

Lines that read like a person

The series line became "3 guys. 2 TVs. 1 basement." Zach's lines were rewritten for someone reading the comic for the first time; the owner's note was that the old ones "read exactly like a robot". That fix became a written dialogue guide, used for every script since.

  4. 10-18-2026

    Five prequels drafted

Five of the Terminal Tales became prequel scripts, with Zach, Bobby and Lexx cast in their roles: Bruce Juice, Chips, We're Not Idiot, PictoChat and Snack Sausage. Each is set years before the main episodes.

  5. 10-19-2026

Bruce Juice gets art, and two problems

12 of its 19 panels were drawn before the image tool hit its usage limit; the rest showed as dialogue-only cards. Looking at them turned up two problems, now open issues: in several panels the two gamers face away from the TV they are playing on, and the TV and controllers look modern, not 2002. The fix on the list is a layered build: empty backgrounds from fixed camera angles, each character drawn on its own, then placed by a script so everyone faces the screen.

  6. 10-26-2026

Bruce Juice is complete, and a new front door

The last seven panels were drawn, so all 19 have art. The series home now opens on Infinite Camo, the owner's pick because it gets a new reader to the joke fastest. Bruce Juice sits in its own Prequel row.

  7. 10-29-2026

    Scripts before art

A review page for the next episodes, so the owner reads and approves every script before any new art is made. Each episode shows its panels and where its art comes from: an existing image to reuse, or a new sheet cut into several panels.

    Goals and this site

The comic got three milestones: friends read it start to end on their own and give feedback, then the quality and polish are done, and everything else waits in Later. The reader now lives here with this build log and the milestones page. The comic took the show's name, Lower Level Legends, and the reader became the home page.
